Roxanne McCann is a native of San Francisco, California. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Classics at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She studied abroad at the Stanford campus in Rome, where she became immersed in Italian Renaissance art. She began studying photography as a college graduate after being given her first camera by Austin McCann.
While producing television commercials in Los Angeles, McCann observed the work of many talented cinematographers, among them Academy Award-winners Haskell Wexler and Conrad Hall and the multi-award-winning director/cameraman Joe Pytka. At that time she began taking production stills.
Renaissance Art has been a continuing inspiration for McCann. In the Ancestral Traditions photo essay the influence of the dramatic chiaroscuro effect used by Caravaggio and the captured moment of the sculptor Bernini are evident. The subjects are lit only by available light – a spotlight, fire, or a sunbeam, and at times emerge from the darkness like apparitions. Many of these limited-edition gelatin silver photographs have been printed by the artist using advanced darkroom techniques.
The Visions of Hawai’i photo essay embraces the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, as seen in a beautiful face, a spectacular vista, or a chameleon’s tiny world. The color work leaves behind the gravitas of the black and white for a lighter feeling.
